Stunning South Shore Home With Contemporary Flair

I am so excited to share this project ~ a stunning South Shore home featuring a limited color palette and lots of dramatic elements. As you can imagine, this project offered new challenges for me due in large part to the color scheme ~ heavy doses of neutrals paired with varying shades of black, dark charcoal and a more burgundy black! My client had a definite vision for what she wanted the end result to be. Coupled with her experience designing a restaurant and love of all kinds of art, the stage was set for a beautiful collaboration between us. Let’s take a peek inside…
The Foyer
The staircase was already carpeted so we added a complementary carpet to the main foyer area. Colony Rug installed it perfectly. The way they hugged the curve of the staircase with the carpet is truly masterful and a perfect custom touch.
Front Room
The Homeowner need a place to see clients so we designed a space right off the foyer that can accomodate many activities including piano playing, entertaining, and a safe place for conversation.
One of the most challenging aspects of this room was to provide privacy in the many windows. After much discussion we decided on top down, bottom up duettes operated by remote control. These are perfect especially with the top down so you can see the beautiful treetops and sky. My client opted to paint two walls a dark brown-black which is stunning and coordinates with the adjacent Dining Room.
The varied artwork adds a shimmery touch to this unique space.
Dining Room
The Dining Room overlooks a beautiful patio and backyard.
French doors are dressed in a beautiful black wool that drapes perfectly from a board mounted treatment. The coffered ceiling is a beautiful architectural detail that dresses up the space in an elegant and refined manner. The table is complimented with a variety of seating from a two person bench to slipcovered parsons chairs.
And of course no Dining Room is complete without a chandelier and this one is a stunner!
Powder Room
We selected a magnificent wall covering by Cole and Son for the Powder Room featuring mischievous monkeys. The large repeat of the paper and the small space of the room provided quite a challenge. The resulting installation is some of my friend Paul’s finest work. Paul meticulously planned every placement of the “monkey and his tail” and executed it to a tee.
A Powder Room is truly a space to make a statement and our client loves the result.
Great Room
We continued the mix of dark chocolate and charcoal in the spacious Great Room. This is a gathering, relaxing, and entertaining space for the family and we wanted to make it comfortable as well as dramatic.
The built-ins and most of the furniture was already in place. We selected a rich Benjamin Moore shade to add personality and drama. I love using an eggshell finish on the walls and any built-ins and a satin finish on the wood trim. This way even if I am using the same color (as we did here) there is a subtle definition and differentiation.
The fabric on the window seat is Kravet ~ love this animal print!
Sunroom
The Sunroom, located just off the Kitchen, is complimentary to the palette of the house and features more views of the beautiful backyard.
I adore the way my client used vintage pieces and layered with an organic touch a la Georgia O’Keefe. The arrangement is by Winston Flowers.
Kitchen
The Kitchen was given an updated look. We did not change out the cabinets but we customized them to accommodate a new sub zero refrigerator. The trash compactor was swapped out for a wine cooler and then we re-painted all of the cabinets for a brighter look.
We added another custom cut carpet by Colony Rug ~ this U shape hugs the island perfectly and complements the hardwood floors which we had refinished using a dark stain. The dark floors throughout anchor and unify the design of the entire first floor.
This project was a true collaboration between my client and me. She pushed me out of my colorful comfort zone to explore darker, richer tones to create the drama and contemporary feel she wanted for her home. Mission accomplished!

Pamela
