A Poem & A Painting: The Red Dress
Apr 04 2016 ·0This week’s painting is an oldie but a goodie. This was one of my first attempts at combining mixed media and oil paint. It turns out I must’ve done something right because this artwork was so popular it was licensed and sold as posters and giclées. I am now working on a gown series~ large format, 24″x36″ ~ and I couldn’t be more excited. If you are interested in a particular color let me know and I will be happy to paint it for you (or your client/friend/sister etc.)! In the meantime, here is this week’s fittingly titled poem…
A Poem & A Painting: Happy Valentine’s Week
Feb 08 2016 ·0Welcome to Valentine’s week ~ yes a whole week, why not? Valentine’s Day is my favorite holiday to share affections with friends and loved ones. I hope you feel the love this week!
A Poem & A Painting: Queen of the Day
Nov 30 2015 ·0My dear friend Sandy Welch creates the most endearing lamb paintings. Lambs are certainly an enchanting subject. Inspired in part by Sandy, I’ve tried my hand at lamb paintings. I adore how this one I painted earlier this year, With A Fleece As White As Snow, turned out. This week’s lamb painting is a bit more whimsical with a touch of glam with her gold gilt crown. I just love the sentiment behind this week’s poem (quote) as well. I can just imagine what this Queen of the Day is thinking…
Stop The Madness
Nov 02 2015 ·0Instead of my usual Monday ‘A Poem & A Painting’ post, today I’m sharing my work for the latest Girls Just Wanna Paint challenge. As you may know, the Girls Just Wanna Paint group (GJWP) is comprised of several “local woman artists who challenge themselves each month with an object or idea that they incorporate into a painting. We post the paintings on the first day of every month, and invite your comments. We meet the first week of every month, to view each others’ work in person, enjoy some great food and wine, and decide what the next month’s subject will be.”
A Poem & A Painting: Mixed Media Empty Nest
Jun 15 2015 ·0I’m trying something a bit different with this week’s painting. I’ve incorporated mixed media in my latest nest…
South Shore Art Center: Forever & After
Mar 19 2015 ·1Thou know’st ‘tis common; all that lives must die,
Passing through nature to eternity.
—William Shakespeare (Hamlet. 1.2.72–73)
I recently visited an amazing art show at the South Shore Art Center’s Bancroft Gallery entitled Forever & After. As the above quote selected by curator Bill Houser alludes to, the show’s themes revolve around the subjects of mortality, death, loss, mourning, monument, and commemoration.
“Sculpture has been used to commemorate and honor the dead since before the Egyptians built the pyramids, to ensure immortality for the spirits of those buried within. The essence of Forever & After is the exploration of the ubiquitous and prophetic themes of loss, commemoration, and belief in spirit with its uncertain evolution or transcendence, through the medium of contemporary sculpture.”
-Bill Houser, Curator
I adore mixed media artwork and this exhibit features pieces created with a wide variety of materials including reclaimed wood, doors, newspaper, and even a typewriter. Here’s a peek at a few of the pieces from the show…
A Poem & A Painting: Summer Concert
Mar 03 2014 ·0I’m preparing for my first full day in Atlanta at the Design Blogger’s Conference (follow me on Twitter and Instagram for updates) but once again I have a poem (sort of) and a painting (sort of) to share. I’m all about bending the rules ~ especially when it comes to my blog and my art!
Today I’m sharing a very special mixed media shadowbox piece I created in honor of my son Fred, whose birthday was over the weekend. If you follow my blog, you know he is a musician, and that was the inspiration for this piece and the accompanying poem (ahem, song lyrics ~ shhh, don’t tell).
