Last week I traveled to New York with fellow Boston-area interior designer and friend, Laurie Gorelick, to preview the newly renovated Ronald McDonald House of Long Island. It was the most spectacular makeover I could have imagined!
As you may know, the Ronald McDonald House is a haven for families, a home-like place to stay while their child is receiving medical treatment at a nearby hospital. There are many Ronald McDonald Houses all over the country including one here in Boston.
This particular Ronald McDonald House on Long Island was started in 1981 under the leadership Lyn Jurick, a powerhouse of a woman, who is still involved to this day. She had the help of many, including her designers William Diamond and Anthony Baratta. The house has served many families over the years and was in need of some tender loving care.
Anthony Baratta, Lyn Jurick and her daughter Susan:
The house needed some minor upholstery changes and that is when Cary Kravet (President of Kravet Fabrics and Furniture) was asked if he could help. It is my understanding that Cary and his family have always wanted to support a Show House but the thought that all that hard work and beautiful design was dismantled after 6 weeks just did not appeal to him. Rather, the Kravets would prefer to be a part of a Show House that would fundraise for a charity and stay in place. When he saw the Ronald McDonald House Long Island he knew he had his ShowHouse! The Kravet team along with 26 Interior Designers, many resources and contractors renovated a total of 31 spaces into restful and peaceful bedrooms, colorful laundry facilities, playrooms with dollhouses, a state of the art media center and a kitchen with 8 work stations. A perfect combination of function, comfort and beauty ~ just incredible!

Leaving my Mark:
My friend and traveling companion, designer Laurie Gorelick:
The kitchen boasts multiple cooking stations for families
A “before” photo of one of the bedrooms:
Hearts at Play bedroom by Kate Singer Home:
Each room had to have 2 queen beds, a desk and a chair and a television. It was interesting to see the different interpretations of these elements.
A beautiful bathroom:
Eric Colher’s Moroccan themed Bedroom looks ready to take you away on a flying carpet, isn’t it beautiful?
I ADORE this treatment on the gliding doors to the clothes closet ~ a total camouflage!
Here’s a closer look at the dimensional application:
Michael Tavano designed one of my favorite rooms. I know you can guess why… my favorite colors, poppy and orange! Love the imaginative details…
Rumor has it that this lamp base is a reasonably priced find from Target (although the marbles were more expensive!):
This window treatment was so much fun
I just had to have my photo taken with Michael, he is a doll!
The bathroom Michael designed boasts a brand new-to-the-market tile, love it!
Look closely at his decorative accessories, and you will see he has a sense of humor too!
Check back tomorrow for Part 2 of my tour of the Ronald McDonald House of Long Island and more incredible interior design!
