A Peek Inside the Empty Nest Studio

Welcome to my favorite room in my house. It is the least decorated, the messiest and I am happiest when in here surrounded by all my creative clutter. It is my studio.
This is where I paint as often as I possibly can. Come in and see what is behind the (usually) closed door…
As you can see I have several of my “petites” lining the walls. People sometimes ask me what my genre is: landscape, portraits, still life? As you can see I paint what appeals to me on any given day or week… or what the monthly Girls Just Wanna Paint Challenge is!
Doesn’t this collection of brushes look impressive? Here’s a little secret: I only use very reasonable flat brushes from a local craft store and only 2 of them at a time.
Typically I love a large palette and this is NOT representative of what my palettes usually looks like. I am a very messy mixer of paints in big round circles that overlap each other until I am literally on the edge!
I paint in oil and j’adore the line up of my colors. When I twist the top off a tube of paint and inhale the aroma it is like an aphrodisiac to me… love it!
I am painting exclusively inside in my studio these days, thanks to the frigid winter temperatures in New England (yes I am a sissy! ). Most of my paintings are based on photographs I have taken or magazine pictures that I interpret and change quite a bit. I love this “Sweet Dreams” painting I recently finished. I’m so excited that it will be on display and for sale at the upcoming Valentine’s Tasting Event at the James Library in February.
It was one of my artist friends who suggested that I paint Interiors because she knows how much I love my design work. The light bulb went off and I thought it was a genius idea~ I wasn’t quite sure why I didn’t think of it (duh)! As you’ve seen here on the blog, I have gone on to paint quite a few interior scenes. On the easel is one of my latest paintings based on a cover from Traditional Home magazine. I was drawn to the vibrantly colored chairs on the cover. Do you like it?
Finally, these are my dancing shoes that I will be wearing in Hingham’s Cabaret this weekend. I took a photo and decided to create this painting which I will use as thank you notes for the directors and my friends in the show (shhhhh, it’s a secret).
I don’t usually allow anyone into my studio as I am still a bit self conscious about my work. However, I’m planning to take a big step once my new and vastly improved blog is live: I am going to be selling my pieces so, please, stay tuned!
I hope you have enjoyed this peek inside Empty Nest Studio!
xo,
Pamela
