Nina Campbell

This month I had the pleasure of meeting and attending a lecture given by renowned interior designer Nina Campbell. Held at the Boston Design Center and sponsored by Osborne & Little, Nina was an engaging speaker with her English accent, dry sense of humor and beautiful slides of her work.
“Nina’s interiors are fashionable, yet they stand the test of time. They are invariably luxurious yet comfortable and practical yet elegant.”

What I adore about Ms. Campbell’s design style is her ability to mix classic pieces with contemporary touches. This aesthetic is reflected not only in her interior designs, but also her interiors product lines as well. Her fabric lines effortlessly showcase whimsical blooms and classic geometric shapes. Pieces in her furniture line exhibit curves that are at once feminine and bit sexy. Actually, I think perhaps I have just described Nina herself! When I first met her she appeared to be mild mannered but upon a closer look, she was wearing heart shaped rimless glasses reminiscent of the 70’s. In conversation she has a very quick wit and a devilish sense of humor. Love her!
Let’s take a closer look at Nina Campbell’s outstanding talent…
This library is filled with so much in the way of fabulous design but what I want to highlight is the vertical smoked mirror pieces dividing the sections of the bookcase. Don’t you love this small but amazing detail? Ms. Campbell explained that she opted for a smoked finish on the mirror pieces so it wasn’t too bright…perfection.
Petite canopies are one of Nina’s trademarks. Often times she couples a canopy with an upholstered headboard. To me this looks so English and so inviting~
This is the Country House Hotel in England:
Nina and her team were hired to refurbish this grand hotel that was in dire need of a large dose of tender loving care. It was of the utmost importance to respect the history and integrity of the building while at the same time creating a hotel that could offer a comfortable and memorable guest experience.
Pictured here is the main lobby area and its multiple seating areas:
Note that there are no heavy draperies on the windows, only a carved cornice for detail. Nina pointed out the “loft” area (to the top right) that she converted to a small pub/bar. A perfect spot to enjoy a hot toddy at the end of day or night…cozy and more intimate.
Here are some of my favorite fabric and wallpaper samples from the Nina Campbell collection…

I count myself so lucky to be able to meet all of these outstanding designers and share their stories with you~
“To ensure a successful mix, I treat cushions, trimming, lampshades and other accessories as the shoes and handbags of the home. The right shoes can really make an outfit ~ and equally, if you have the wrong shoes you can feel old fashioned in the smartest of suits.”

Wishing everyone a wonderful, Happy Thanksgiving!
