My Best Closet Design Tips

If you’ve seen my Dressing Rooms Pinterest board or my Dream Closet blog post, then you know how much I adore a fabulous closet space. But really, who doesn’t?? Whether you have a luxurious walk-in closet or a compact closet with bi-fold doors, there are steps you can take to maximize storage, accessibility, and style.
Here are some of my Best Closet Design Tips….
1. My number one tip for Closet Design is to work with a Closet Designer. A Closet Designer will work with your budget, your space, and your closet contents to outfit your closet with storage options tailored to your specific needs.
My Closet Designer, Tina from Aphrotidy, left no detail to chance when decking out my closet: she did everything from measuring the length of my dresses to counting how many pairs of shoes I own. My closet is functional and beautiful with a place for everything. What more could you ask for?
2. If space allows, a closet should have a place to sit.
Whether you incorporate a free-standing chaise or chair or built-in upholstered seating, having a place to sit while putting on your Louboutins or your ostrich feathered slippers is lovely little luxury!
If you don’t have space inside your closet, even a fashionable pouf adjacent to the closet doors will be a welcome spot to sit while dressing.
3. When designing your closet, don’t underestimate the importance of great lighting.
My recommendation is to utilize a combination of recessed lighting along with something fanciful for the eye. I love crystal chandeliers, but an interesting drum shaded pendant is another great option.
4. Remember, this is your closet, make it work for you with personalized function.
Depending on your personality and needs, that could mean anything from incorporating a washer and dryer into the closet to adding a beautiful vanity space or specialized jewelry storage. One of the most functional things in my closet is my travel/valet hook. I use this hook all the time to plan my outfits for a weekend with the girls or several days of business (or pleasure) travel. This practice saves me time, helps keep me organized, and works well for me.
5. Whether large or small, treat your closet as a separate sanctuary and apply similar design considerations as a room.
This means carefully considering options such as paint colors and decorative elements. For example, it’s important to keep closet walls neutral so as not to cast a tone onto your clothing. For the ceiling, I love the color and soft blush hue of Benjamin Moore Veil Cream (PT-370, Studio Finish). A lush carpet with a fabulous pattern can really enliven a space and offer a polished design touch. Finally, a vase filled with a bouquet of fresh flowers (yes, in your closet!), provides a pop of color and a bit of unexpected natural beauty.
