Valentines from the Heart
Feb 08 2013 ·0I have such fond childhood memories of Valentine’s Day. When I was a little girl, my sisters and I would always make handmade Valentines. Our mother explained that handmade were most special because you created them.
A Peek Inside the Empty Nest Studio
Jan 29 2013 ·0Welcome to my favorite room in my house. It is the least decorated, the messiest and I am happiest when in here surrounded by all my creative clutter. It is my studio.
This is where I paint as often as I possibly can. Come in and see what is behind the (usually) closed door…
Pamela’s Posh Picks: My Favorite Christmas Cards
Dec 21 2012 ·1Capturing the annual Christmas card photo when my children were younger was not an easy task. After what seemed like 48 attempts, a few tears (theirs and mine), and possibly a bribe or two, finally we would have a ‘keeper’. Now that they are older, the process is, slightly, easier ;-).
Chicago: Neighborhoods, Museums & All That Jazz
Oct 17 2012 ·0Another weekend, another weekend trip for me. This trip however was extra special as I traveled to Chicago to visit my son Fred. He just relocated there and he couldn’t wait to show off his new city to me ~ and I couldn’t wait to see it!
My Summer of Weddings
Sep 25 2012 ·0“Today I will marry my best friend, the one I laugh with, live for, dream with, LOVE”
~Author Unknown
It’s been of Summer of Love in 2012, as I’ve just attended my third wedding of the season! It is always a privilege to witness the joy and love as two people start their lives together. Not only do I enjoy basking in the glow of happiness at a wedding, I adore all the details that go into making each event special.
Pamela’s Posh Picks: Glam Up Your Dorm Room!
Aug 24 2012 ·0As Labor Day and the unofficial end of Summer approaches, several of my friends have been making the trip to college campuses near and far to deliver their daughters (and sons) to their new home away from home for the next four years. Having been through this bittersweet transition time twice myself, I feel their trepidation and their excitement. I want them to know I’m here to lend an ear to listen or a shoulder to cry on. And of course the designer in me is here to lend a few design tips to take those dorm rooms from drab to fab! That’s why this week’s Posh Picks are all about setting up a comfortable and beautiful dorm room.
Let’s start with the focal point of the room: the bed.
I love this Suzani Duvet Cover in Warm from PBTeen.
The lively pattern and bright colors are sure to enliven any bedroom space–even a dorm room.
To add some contrast, this Dottie sheet set in Pink Magenta fits the bill.
One of my favorite tricks for adding pizazz to your bed is to use a second sheet set and mix and match the flat sheet and fitted sheet for even more versatility. In this case, I’d love to see a pop of bright yellow:
Banana Yellow sheet set on Amazon
A fun bedside lamp is a homey touch that adds a soft glow ~ save the task lighting for the desk area.
I adore this Ikat shade in Pool from PBTeen. The pattern coordinates with the Suzani comforter and the beaded ball fringe adds a wonderful and unexpected touch of bling!
The Mod Lamp Base from PBTeen is the perfect complement!
Of course there’s bound to be lots and lots of studying going on ~ you might as well have a great looking desk chair.
The Furlicious (love the name!) Airgo chair from PBTeen provides a “fabulously furry place to study”:
Just because I love you sweeties, here’s a mood board showing everything all together:
I added in the compass because no matter where you or your loved ones are, all roads lead home.
This week’s petite oil painting is one of my favorites and oh-so-appropriate for the theme, Empty Nest:
Where we love is home ~ home that our feet may leave, but not our hearts.

Visiting Nantucket
Aug 21 2012 ·0Ah, Nantucket.
This geographically isolated (30 miles out at sea from Cape Cod) and culturally sophisticated (what international vacation destination isn’t?) island restores my soul each time I step upon her shores.
For 23 years I have blessed to visit Nantucket with my dearest girlfriends. When we are there, I believe the island rocks just a little bit more in the water from our laughter and ahem, our dancing!
Each trip, our cocktail mistress Tina creates a cocktail of the season for our enjoyment. This time it was Watermelon Strawberry Martinis.
Delicious and a perfect way to kick off the relaxation at our friend’s home.
This year during our stay we were fortunate to enjoy nearly perfect weather. The sky was cerulean blue and the water a beautiful reflection of it with a hint of phthalo (art speak for green). Whether you reach this charming island by yacht, ferry or plane and stay for one day or several, you must make time to explore. Here are some of my favorite sights from Main Street and beyond…
For us, a stop at Bartlett’s Farm is always a necessity. The amazing fresh corn, tomatoes and fleurs are all so beautiful ~ and tasty.
Their growing fields are like a paint palette.
Downtown offers art for all tastes. Among my favorites is Art Cabinet Nantucket ~ very avant garde and not to be missed.
In another gallery along Main Street, this piece was so charming. I love how it captures the innocence of childhood and the simplicity of a day at the beach on the island.
The little girl in this painting reminded my friend Sandy of my daughter Emily when she was a child. I have to say, I do agree!
For shopping, my favorite island boutique still remains Trillium. Just look at this table arrangement…
Even my cooking would taste good on this striking china!
Of course my mind is never far from my job, and thinking about color is such a large part of what I do. At Parchment, I spied this fun stationery line from Pantone. Unfortunately, my favorite, Tangerine Tango, was out of stock. Maybe next time…
This window had most inviting wedding shoes all in a row just waiting for a bride. They all seemed to be saying, “Pick me”!
With all of the window shopping and exploring, you are bound to get hungry. We were excited to dine at CRU, a new restaurant that is the talk of the island.
The food was delightful but the designer in me was even more captivated by the decor!
The outdoor furniture was spectacular. I love this modern wing chair:
and a sofa with this view is pretty nice…
Don’t you love the punch of color?
For me, the pièce de resistance is actually inside the restaurant. This incredible crystal embellished driftwood chandelier is the centerpiece of the main dining room.
I adore the combination of rough and more formal ~so captivating and chic! You never want to look like you are trying too hard…the key to understated elegance.
Mother Nature is a master of understated elegance…
Oh Nantucket, such a lush place, a little bit of heaven on earth…
“Turn your face to the sun and the shadows fall behind you.”

The 4th of July: Time to Celebrate…and Decorate!
Jul 03 2012 ·0Happy July 4th! Time to take a break from our routines and celebrate our country and enjoy the summer sunshine. Time to take out the patriotic plates, red, white and blue buntings and American flags. Time to gather with family and friends.
Here are a few ideas to help you jazz up your home and terraces for your 4th of July celebration~
Set the table with stars and stripes.
Go ahead and mix in some seasonal paper goods. There are so many great patterns to choose from and paper plates help make clean-up a breeze.
Don’t forget to add decorations in unexpected places. Even the sculpture in my Foyer “dresses” for the 4th of July!
One of the best parts about a summer holiday is enjoying your outdoor spaces. This time of year my deck is in full bloom ~ and the perfect spot to watch fireworks from afar. I love to accent the fleurs with a small flag…
and a well-placed tiara or two! Isn’t she beautiful?
Don’t forget about crowns for you and your guests as well.
I use my collection year after year, adding to my stockpile when a festive headpieces catches my eye.
Patriotic tiaras make for great photo ops!
At my home, the main event on the 4th is always the fireworks display from Boston decorating the night sky…
The most perfect spot to view fireworks has to be with a reflection on the water, how lovely!
As you can see I must perfect my ability to photograph at night~but believe me, it is stunning!
After a night of patriotic revelry, I always love knowing a fun time was had by all…
Oh beautiful for spacious skies,
For amber waves of grain,
For purple mountains majesties Above the fruited plain.
America! America!
God shed his grace on thee,
And crown thy good with brotherhood
From sea to shining sea.
As much as I enjoy this fun and festive summer celebration, l do hope you’ll join me in remembering the heroes who help make our freedom possible. I’ll be raising a glass to my dad Marston who served in WW II, 8th Armored Division. Thank you for your service!
Wishing you a happy and safe 4th of July!

Pamela

Girls Just Wanna Paint
Jun 04 2012 ·0As many of you know, along with being an interior designer I am also an oil painter. I am constantly working to improve my skills by taking classes with local artists and painting as frequently as possible. What a thrill it was then when I was recently invited to join the women artists of Girls Just Wanna Paint.
Formed in 2009, Girls Just Wanna Paint is group of 12 artists who challenge themselves each month to incorporate a selected object or idea into a painting. The paintings are posted at the beginning of each month on the Girls Just Wanna Paint blog where we invite your comments and feedback.
The group meets during the first week of every month. We view each other’s work in person, enjoy some great food and wine, and decide what the next month’s subject will be. This is a collection of serious artists who also have a lot of fun–right up my alley!
I am delighted to be a part of this esteemed group of women. Most of the artists are professionals and teachers and all are very inspiring. Their individual spirit and soul comes through in their work. I invite you to visit the Girls Just Wanna Paint site and peruse the artists’ websites and blogs. I guarantee you will fall in love with their work as I have~
My next painting as part of the Girls Just Wanna Paint group will be up at the beginning of July. As a complement to this new venture, I am pleased to announce a new weekly feature on my blog. Each week at the end of one of the blog posts (typically Pamela’s Posh Picks) I will be sharing one of my petite Interiors oil paintings. I would love to hear your feedback on these paintings. Of course I am also open to painting custom pieces of your special Interior space in oil. These works can be framed or reproduced as beautiful stationery.
I hope you will enjoy this new feature and look forward to sharing my painting journey with you!

My Interior Art Paintings
Apr 10 2012 ·0For years now, I’ve been learning to paint with oils. Thanks in no small part to the wide variety of classes I’ve taken with so many gifted instructors and artists, I’ve made great strides. I so enjoy the process of oil painting, the tranquility and creativity it affords, and with much practice, the results. Over the years I’ve painted an array of subject matter: from flowers and landscapes to portraits and figures to still life. However, I had yet to find a genre that would “just fit me”. Then came my a-ha moment: I decided to try painting interiors. Using my own designs along with designs from magazines as inspiration, I think I may have found my niche!
I am really having fun with this new genre and I’m loving these petite (6″x6″) room portraits. Come take a peek and please, let me know what you think~
This first one is almost an exact duplicate of the magazine shot with the exception of the carpet which is my interpretation as you can see.
It’s amazing what you can fit on a 6×6 canvas, isn’t it?
The next magazine shot I rendered very loosely. The under painting is a coral red and I love how it peeks out from the taupe paint. I changed the color of the pink pouf to my new fave, orange. It seems to be very “in” to paint with large brush strokes and not with too much detail~ this is an example of that style.
Ah, my friend Paul insisted I find a room that was masculine. I think this is perfect: the dark wood paneling, the painting of a virile animal and books in bold, dark colors. You may notice the original has a black cross drawn in the middle of it, this helps guide me in the drawing of the furniture and other large details.
My friend, teacher, and outstanding painter, Lisa Daria Kennedy encouraged me to paint the edges of this room very loosely to draw the eye towards the chair and the desk. I experimented and loved the result… Thank you L.
And finally my favorite~My interpretation of the cover of Veranda (note the absence of the puppy…). However the silk window creation, niches and soft peach hues remain and frame the window overlooking this grand view. Ahhh, Spring…..
If you would like a painting of one of your favorite interiors please contact me~ these also make extra special stationary…
I hope you enjoy sharing in my painting journey as much as I am enjoying taking it! As always, thank you for your feedback and support!

The Votes Are In…
Mar 12 2012 ·0A while back I shared with you my process for selecting a frame to highlight the star piece of artwork for my foyer, a lively and colorful beach scene by my friend, artist Sandy Welch. With the help of Kate from South Street Gallery, we picked out a beautiful, contemporary frame. The question then became to filet or not to filet? That’s where you my dear readers and friends came in. Your votes and comments encouraged me to go for it and to add the filet to the frame! Without further ado, here is the result:
The champagne finish frame adds polish and the poppy colored filet adds “punch”.
Adding the filet was definitely a risk but I am thrilled I took it! I think it gave this large frame the pizazz it needed to balance the color of the painting and set the tone for my home on the ocean.
You may notice a few other updates to the space. This newly upholstered french antique chair with the magenta dots against the silvered grey background lends a subtle compliment to the painting and frame. Coupled with the freshly dressed table and new lighting, I’m loving this welcoming entrance. Thank for participating in the first Posh Palettes vote ever!
Speaking of painting, this past week I participated in a 2 day painting workshop with Kelley MacDonald at her studio in Warren RI. What a treat. Not only is she one of my favorite artists but she is an intuitive instructor and these 2 days with her were outstanding! During the workshop we practiced several techniques in oil painting.
We worked on value studies (ugh, not my favorite although very necessary). We had 5, 10 and then 15 minutes to complete our work.
Kelley also had us do timed paintings with other still life subjects.
We had 10 minutes to paint 3 lemon sections– wait, REEEALLY??
Finally we did a graph painting of 3 forms in 30 minutes.
I was amazed at the paintings I produced and even more amazed at what I learned. Thank you Kelley for an incredible 2 days of inspiration and art!

Decking the Halls
Dec 13 2011 ·0“ Yes, we need a little Christmas right this very minute, candles in the window, carols at the spinet, Yes, we need a little Christmas now….”
~Mame
This is one of my favorite times of the year~ and there are so many reasons why. Tiny white and colored lights everywhere~ remember my motto, “too much of a good thing is wonderful”. Every interior is a bit overdressed (which I love). At my house, champagne and Prosecco are the drinks of choice. Christmas trees come in all shapes and sizes (just like all of us) and they are all beautiful (just like all of us). We are surrounded by family and friends singing Christmas carols with glorious voices and twinkles in their eyes, exchanging warm, meaningful embraces. Oh I just love the Holidays, if only they could last a bit longer!
One of my most enjoyable days of the season is always the one I spend decorating my home for Christmas. This year I have a new space with a new palette so my creativity was heightened and ready to go with new ideas and designs. Come and take a peek at what I came up with. I hope you can glean some inspiration to try something new for your own holiday decorating this year!
The Foyer sets the tone with a simple balsam wreath at the base of this sculpture
I love to place the Christmas tree in an area that can be viewed from as many seating areas as possible
This year I treated myself to a new flocked tree (similar tree available from Amazon.com). This is an artificial tree which means I can leave it up as long as I like. The base color of the branches is green which are then beautifully layered with a thick covering of velvetesque snow. It’s quite striking against my poppy-colored art wall.
Each year I add additional ornaments to my collection this year I added orange (a nod to the Pantone color of the year for 2012, Tangerine Tango) and turquoise for depth. These bold glass balls really enhanced my extra special ornaments.
Fireplace mantels offer an unbeatable focal point to hang a festive seasonal swag. This year I used an artificial green base and embellished it with one-of-a-kind treasures from Jacobson’s Floral in Boston.
Here I used golden leaves, flocked fiddle heads and cascading snow dots. You can use whatever baubles strike your fancy ~ just don’t forget to wire them all together!
One of my favorite parts of decorating is rediscovering my treasures that have been hidden away for the year. Here is a hand made Santa by Maine artist Pat Frost. I love his plaster face and hands, vintage clothing and his sand dollar collar.
Every nook and cranny can be “Christmas-ified”. One of my favorite vignettes is this collection of art by Sandy Welch. The wall surface of opalescent seashells by Maya Romanoff (sourced at Donghia, Boston Design Center ) plays perfectly off the sparkle of the antique glitter stars.
Don’t forget the bedrooms. You can trim the headboards with garlands and add wreaths to the windows. We want everyone to have visions of sugar plums dance in their heads on Christmas Eve!
‘Tis the season to enjoy your holiday home!

Thanksgiving
Nov 21 2011 ·0I had high hopes for this week’s entry~ one of my favorite things to do in anticipation of Thanksgiving is to design the invitation (perhaps a handpainted one), plan the guest list and create a beautiful table scape. Did you notice cooking is not even mentioned? Usually, just before the doorbell announces the beginning of the party I dash around the house and take some photographs for the book I will publish one day (or at the very least to record for my amusement the “Tables I Have Set”).
Along the way I have developed some meaningful traditions I was going to share (that I knew would change the life of all my followers, yes you, Ginny and Tina). After looking at 100’s of photos do you think I could find just the exact pictures that I was looking for? The perfect ones to illustrate what I had in mind? OF COURSE NOT!
So, this year, I will take lots of photographs. I will post the most entertaining ones on my Facebook page so please take a peek next weekend. In the meantime I am going to go straight to the real message of this blog entry.
Thanksgiving is special for so many reasons. It is one of the purest Holidays because we are focused on appreciation for what we have and sharing with others. We count our blessings. When my children were young we had a piece of paper on the refrigerator with the title, We are Thankful for…. and everyone who came into the house jotted down a sentiment. We often had something recorded as serious as my Grampy and Grammy right next to ice cream….
Whether you are seated at an urban Thanksgiving table at the W penthouse in Boston
Or a more traditional table by the sea
Remember it is who we are surrounded by that truly counts~ Blessed are our family and friends
The best friends a girl could ever ask for~
And of course, a beautiful bountiful creative table always adds a posh touch to the Thanksgiving feast!
“As we express gratitude, we must never forget that the highest appreciation is not to utter words, but to live by them.”
~John Fitzgerald Kennedy
Wishing you a Happy Thanksgiving!

Food, Glorious Food, Part 1
May 22 2011 ·0“Life is a combination of magic and pasta”
~Federico Fellini
One of the highlights of our trip to Italy was attending a cooking class at Ristorante Il Ritrovo . Chef Salvatore was a wonderful, engaging teacher and just the epitome of an Italian chef. Chef Salvatore views cooking as his art and he excels at his art!
Our first task was to make pasta. After combining the ingredients, we kneaded the semolina dough.
Next step: putting the dough through the pasta press to make a uniform sheet.
We made flat pasta as well as ravioli. For the ravioli filling, we made a luscious mixture of 5 different cheeses.
After the pasta, it was time to whip up a tomato sauce. We created a wonderful Pomodoro sauce.
The key to this sauce, as with so much of the cooking in Italy, is in the freshness and quality of the ingredients. Chef Salvatore emphasized this point to us repeatedly: use the best ingredients you can. Our sauce was so delicious, I thought I’d share the recipe! I can imagine using cherry tomatoes from the garden this summer as the basis for this sauce. Mmmmm ~
Pomodoro Sauce
Ingredients:
Cherry tomatoes, halved or quartered
1 small clove garlic, finely minced
1 bunch flat leaf parsley, dry and finely chopped
Pinch of crushed red pepper
Extra Virgin olive oil, best you can find and fruity (frutti)
Starchy water from cooked pasta
Coarse salt
Freshly grated Parmesan Reggiano
Fettucine or other long, flat pasta
Directions:
- In a cool saute pan, combine 3-4 T olive oil and garlic then heat to medium. Stir occasionally, taking care that the garlic doesn’t brown as the pan heats up.
- When you begin to smell the garlic and hear it sizzle a bit, stir in crushed red pepper and a handful of parsley.
- Add tomatoes and let them cook for a few minutes. As the tomatoes begin to soften, crush them with a fork. Continue crushing tomatoes as the mixture cooks until they no longer look like tomatoes.
- Add a ladleful or two of starchy water to the tomato mixture and stir until blended.
- Add salt to taste
- The pomodoro sauce won’t take more than 10 minutes to prepare and shouldn’t be cooked much longer.
- If necessary, remove the sauce from the heat while you wait for the pasta to cook.
- Once pasta is cooked to al dente (firm to the bite) stage, drain, and add pasta to the saute pan with the sauce.
- The pasta will continue to cook so it is important not to overcook the pasta in the water.
- Serve immediately, topping with fresh parsley and garnish with freshly grated Parmesan cheese and olive oil.

After all of our hard work, it was time to sit down to an amazing meal in Il Ritrovo’s dining room overlooking the Mediterranean. We enjoyed roasted vegetables, our pasta dishes and a chocolate torta for dessert.
What an incredible experience! The food that we prepared was simple but delectable. With minimal ingredients you could really taste the freshness as the flavors exploded in your mouth with each bite. As an interior designer, one of the most important aspects of any of my projects is editing a space. A few well placed, hand chosen pieces make the design pop. In Italian cooking and interior design the same principle applies: it doesn’t have to be complicated to be beautiful ~ or delicious!
Life is too short, and I’m Italian: I’d much rather eat pasta and drink wine than be a size 0

Hip Hip Hooray!
May 14 2011 ·0Last weekend we journeyed to Delaware, Ohio for my son Freddy’s graduation from Ohio Wesleyan University. It was a wonderful trip with lots of celebrating, lots of memorable moments and lots of reminiscing. Of course there were also lots of photos!
We enjoyed a magnificent show at the Shadowbox Cabaret Theater! So looking forward to our next visit there when Freddy will be part of the ensemble!
I am so proud of my son and so excited to watch his future unfold!

Positively Positano
May 08 2011 ·0“Positano bites deep. It is a dream place that isn’t quite real when you are
there and becomes beckoningly real after you are gone”
~John Steinbeck
I feel as though I am just now waking from the dream that was my trip to Positano, Italy. It was, in a word, amazing. It was my first visit to this breathtaking region and Positano did not disappoint.
Getting to Positano involved a drive on mountain roads replete with hairpin turns. Yet with each curve, a new breathtaking vista came into view. Driving here is not for the beginner or the faint of heart!
Located along the Amalfi Coast, Positano’s dramatically steep seaside cliffs and stunning views greet you as you arrive. The town of Positano is tucked into the mountains and presents a dramatic vertical panorama of colors; houses in pastel pinks and yellows, the sunbathed shades of ivory limestone and of course the incredible blue of the sea. With this unique geography, steps nearly replace roads in Positano–with over 400 from the beach to our villa!
Positano is full of charm and was the perfect backdrop for a vacation with my gal pals Tina and Gina. And yes, during the trip I changed my name to Pina–it seemed only fitting!
More inspiration and photos to come!

Off on an Adventure…
Apr 25 2011 ·0I am heading off on a much anticipated girls’ vacation, sure to be filled scenic touring and plein air painting. As usual I’ve packed “light”, with contingencies for all possible weather situations: rain, wind, & beach. After all, one can never tell! I will be sure to post beautiful pictures of inspiration upon my return!

Ruffled Umbrellas
Apr 15 2011 ·0I don’t know about you, but around here it’s been a long week. Tax time, personal and professional obligations and the persistent lack of natural greenery outdoors have all taken their toll. When I came across this photo I took during a trip to Bermuda last year it summed up how I’m feeling right now.
Can you see that one of these glamorous umbrellas is not like the others? The one with its arms down, too tired to extend and hold up its beautiful bounty of ruffles? That would be me at the end of this week!
This weekend I’m planning to take some time to refresh and recharge, perhaps envisioning myself relaxing by the Spa Pool at the Hamilton Princess once again.
Hopefully by next week I’ll be fully extending my arms once again. Wish me luck!
