Diary of an Interior Designer: Cape Cod Seaside Home, The Living Room
May 28 2013 ·0The Living Room is always the center of the home and a gathering place for family. It is a place to come together for celebrations, conversation and the making of memories. In this house the Living Room is literally and figuratively in the center of the home. The prime location means the space boasts breathtaking, panoramic views of the waterfront. This Living Room is also replete with character-building architectural details ~ which means we had another great starting point for our interior design. Come on in…
Art Opening: Lisa Daria Kennedy
Apr 02 2013 ·0Last week I attended an Art Opening for my friend, the very talented Lisa Daria Kennedy at the South Shore Conservatory in Hingham…
3 by Sandy Welch
Jan 30 2013 ·0Today I’d like to share with you three paintings by a woman who is not only a supremely talented artist, but one of my oldest and dearest friends: Sandy Welch.
You may recognize Sandy’s work as I’ve shared it in this space before. I have several of her paintings in my home including a spectacular beach scene in my foyer. Either way, you are in for a treat!
A Peek Inside the Empty Nest Studio
Jan 29 2013 ·0Welcome to my favorite room in my house. It is the least decorated, the messiest and I am happiest when in here surrounded by all my creative clutter. It is my studio.
This is where I paint as often as I possibly can. Come in and see what is behind the (usually) closed door…
Art Week
Jan 28 2013 ·0If you’ve been reading my blog for any length of time, you know how important art is to me. Along with being an interior designer, I am an artist. Throughout the course of my studies, I have been fortunate to learn from and paint alongside so many brilliant local artists. This week I’ll be shining the spotlight on several of these talented women along with a look inside my own studio.
Paint Like Van Gogh
Dec 20 2012 ·0I mentioned in yesterday’s post that my painting group’s next challenge topic is Paint Like Matisse, inspired by our trip to the Met. I thought you might enjoy seeing my painting from last month’s challenge at Girls Just Wanna Paint, Paint Like Van Gogh.
Matisse at the Met
Dec 19 2012 ·0While visiting NYC a couple of weeks ago I had the great pleasure of viewing the Matisse exhibit at the Metropolitan Museum during the member’s preview. The exhibit spanned his career and included paintings in pairs, trios and series. Matisse (1869-1954) was continually trying, as he put it, “to push further and deeper into true painting”. Along with my friend and fellow artist Page, we explored the exhibit, Matisse: In Search of True Painting.
The Bliss of Summer Arts Festivals
Jun 19 2012 ·0“When we artists put a painting on a wall at an exhibition, we bare our souls…at that time everyone becomes a critic.”
~Sidney Hermel
This weekend the South Shore Art Center sponsored the 57th Annual Arts Festival on the Cohasset Common and once again it was outstanding!
The festival is truly a celebration of the arts with nearly 100 juried exhibitor booths, a variety of live music performances, delicious food, artist demonstrations, children’s art activities and a young artists’ exhibition. For me, the highlight of the festival is always the juried art exhibition and members’ show. This year was no exception.
The Art Exhibit is staged under large, peaked tents which not only allows ample viewing space for each piece, but also make a beautiful statement on the Common with their iconic silhouettes.
On Friday, the festival officially opened with the distribution of ribbons for the the “Best of the Best” artworks. My dear friend and fellow GJP‘er, Page Railsback won a bright Pink ribbon in honor of Roz Farbush for her painting and she was thrilled (as was I).
My friend and another Girls Just Wanna Paint member, Sally Dean was not only the cover artist for the festival program and posters, but also won a ribbon for her beautiful and imaginative painting~
The art on display included many mediums, the broad array is one of the things that makes the outdoor festivals so appealing. Don’t you love this sculpture? I think this would look divine in a foyer.
This mixed media piece is nothing short of amazing. As you view it from a distance, it appears to be a swirling mermaid or goddess.
But then as you look closer… Such attention to detail and composition, isn’t that incredible?
Jeanne MacFarland is a very well respected artist (and another GJP‘er) and her paintings have an “old world” quality to them. This boat at water’s edge is serene…
Watercolors are always very popular and this is a masterful example:
You may recognize this last painting, though it is a bit more fancy than the last time I showed it…
Dressed up in a new frame, it is one of my “petite interiors”. I was so proud to have it in the member’s show!
Art shows and festivals are truly for people of all ages…. I hope you get a chance to enjoy an Arts Festival this summer, always a delightful way to spend the day!

Pamela

Girls Just Wanna Paint
Jun 04 2012 ·0As many of you know, along with being an interior designer I am also an oil painter. I am constantly working to improve my skills by taking classes with local artists and painting as frequently as possible. What a thrill it was then when I was recently invited to join the women artists of Girls Just Wanna Paint.
Formed in 2009, Girls Just Wanna Paint is group of 12 artists who challenge themselves each month to incorporate a selected object or idea into a painting. The paintings are posted at the beginning of each month on the Girls Just Wanna Paint blog where we invite your comments and feedback.
The group meets during the first week of every month. We view each other’s work in person, enjoy some great food and wine, and decide what the next month’s subject will be. This is a collection of serious artists who also have a lot of fun–right up my alley!
I am delighted to be a part of this esteemed group of women. Most of the artists are professionals and teachers and all are very inspiring. Their individual spirit and soul comes through in their work. I invite you to visit the Girls Just Wanna Paint site and peruse the artists’ websites and blogs. I guarantee you will fall in love with their work as I have~
My next painting as part of the Girls Just Wanna Paint group will be up at the beginning of July. As a complement to this new venture, I am pleased to announce a new weekly feature on my blog. Each week at the end of one of the blog posts (typically Pamela’s Posh Picks) I will be sharing one of my petite Interiors oil paintings. I would love to hear your feedback on these paintings. Of course I am also open to painting custom pieces of your special Interior space in oil. These works can be framed or reproduced as beautiful stationery.
I hope you will enjoy this new feature and look forward to sharing my painting journey with you!

My Interior Art Paintings
Apr 10 2012 ·0For years now, I’ve been learning to paint with oils. Thanks in no small part to the wide variety of classes I’ve taken with so many gifted instructors and artists, I’ve made great strides. I so enjoy the process of oil painting, the tranquility and creativity it affords, and with much practice, the results. Over the years I’ve painted an array of subject matter: from flowers and landscapes to portraits and figures to still life. However, I had yet to find a genre that would “just fit me”. Then came my a-ha moment: I decided to try painting interiors. Using my own designs along with designs from magazines as inspiration, I think I may have found my niche!
I am really having fun with this new genre and I’m loving these petite (6″x6″) room portraits. Come take a peek and please, let me know what you think~
This first one is almost an exact duplicate of the magazine shot with the exception of the carpet which is my interpretation as you can see.
It’s amazing what you can fit on a 6×6 canvas, isn’t it?
The next magazine shot I rendered very loosely. The under painting is a coral red and I love how it peeks out from the taupe paint. I changed the color of the pink pouf to my new fave, orange. It seems to be very “in” to paint with large brush strokes and not with too much detail~ this is an example of that style.
Ah, my friend Paul insisted I find a room that was masculine. I think this is perfect: the dark wood paneling, the painting of a virile animal and books in bold, dark colors. You may notice the original has a black cross drawn in the middle of it, this helps guide me in the drawing of the furniture and other large details.
My friend, teacher, and outstanding painter, Lisa Daria Kennedy encouraged me to paint the edges of this room very loosely to draw the eye towards the chair and the desk. I experimented and loved the result… Thank you L.
And finally my favorite~My interpretation of the cover of Veranda (note the absence of the puppy…). However the silk window creation, niches and soft peach hues remain and frame the window overlooking this grand view. Ahhh, Spring…..
If you would like a painting of one of your favorite interiors please contact me~ these also make extra special stationary…
I hope you enjoy sharing in my painting journey as much as I am enjoying taking it! As always, thank you for your feedback and support!

It's a Frame Up!
Jan 24 2012 ·0“You have it in you to give that extra little bit. You know that you could add that finishing touch. You know you can take that extra step.”
~Marilyn Moats Kennedy
By now you know the importance I place on original art in an interior space. From its transformative properties to the pure joy and beauty that art brings to a room and the viewer, a wonderful painting (or any piece of art, really) can be the centerpiece of an entire room.
Equally important though not equally discussed, is the value of a custom frame for your prized artwork. That extra step, that finishing touch. That’s why today I’d like you to accompany me on a trip to my fabulous local frame shop, South Street Gallery in Hingham, MA. I’m going to take you through, step-by-step, my process as I select a frame for one of my most favorite pieces of art in my home.
First let me show you the painting we’ll be working with. It’s a colorful beach scene by renowned artist and my dear friend Sandy Welch. Don’t you just love this? I can feel the sun shine when I look at this painting!
The painting hangs in the Foyer of my home, setting the tone for my waterfront abode with its glorious color and seaside scene.
Notice that this painting was created on a deep, finished canvas. The artist continued the painting around the edges giving you the option of hanging it without a frame. I prefer a more traditional and opulent approach however, so off we go to the frame shop!
The best frame shop to seek out is not only one with an outstanding selection but a proprietor who has an artist’s eye and can help you with your options.
Meet Kate, from South Street Gallery. My personal framing consultant (she could be yours, too!).
Here, Kate is holding up a frame with a “fillet”, a small piece of mulling which fits inside a larger frame for decorative purposes.
I like the fillet but I think this frame is far too ornate for this painting. While I liked the frame sample on the wall, the only way to discover how it will look with your artwork is to place it on all 4 corners and try to visualize it around the entire piece. The frame should complement the artwork, not compete with it. It is also important to keep in the mind the style of the piece and where it will be installed.
Let’s go back to the drawing board for more selections.
When selecting a frame, keep in mind that the depth of the canvas is critical.
As you can see here, this frame leaves some of the painting exposed. While this would not be an issue if the painting is installed in a space where no view would be seen on either side, I’m going to select a deeper frame.
This is an option:
This is one of my favorite contemporary frames
It doesn’t distract from the painting but adds a posh polish. Which finish is best next to the sand? Both work well with the blue sky~ hmmm…
Should we add a dark brown fillet for contrast and a peek of drama? Or will this create a “coloring book” effect when surrounding the entire painting?
Wait a minute, what’s this? Fillets in color??
Kate have you been holding out on me?? What about the poppy colored one that would draw in the poppy wall from the Living Room? Oh, this could be just perfect!
What do you think?
It seems I’m at a crossroads. I love the painting with just the large frame but oh, the pop of color from the poppy fillet ~ I love that too! What’s a designer to do?
Here’s where you step in dear readers and friends.
Should I frame it with the poppy fillet~
or the larger frame only?
(Note: photos taken in natural light)
Please vote this week in the comments section! I will post the winning result soon and then frame my beloved beach painting. Of course I’ll share the new space with you as soon as the framed painting is installed.
Thank you, kind and loyal readers, for participating in my first poll!
xo,
Pamela

Art for Interiors: Fort Point Open Studios
Oct 24 2011 ·0“Art and life are not separate domains”
~Piet Mondrian
Last weekend my friends, Ginny and Jen and I visited several art studios in the Fort Point Area of Boston. Most of the art spaces in the buildings we visited are co-ops which means that the artist and their families (and often, pets) live in their studios as well as create there. It is simply ingenious the way they have arranged the living spaces: loft style beds to maximize floor space, camouflaged kitchens behind screens or curtains and loads of clever storage and display solutions for supplies and treasured possessions. Oh, and the painting, sculpting or print making studios take up most of the square footage! It was a delightful peek behind the scenes of some wonderful work environments and some unique floor plans for me~
These tubes are just waiting to burst with color
Believing the brush will convert your dream into a masterpiece~
Of all of the artists whom we met, here are 3 of my favorites~
Linda’s pottery is very organic. The designs are original shapes with interesting details, do you see the skyline nestled in the rhododendron shape leaves?
This vase is beautiful adorned with fleurs or not. Any one of her pieces would be a perfect addition on a bookcase, as a collection on a coffee table or of course could stand alone as a centerpiece vase on a table with a fresh bouquet.
Lisa is one of my favorite Fort Point artists. I’ve had the privilege of taking a portrait class with her and she is a detailed and profound teacher. I love her work and hope to add one of her masterpieces to my collection one day and I strongly urge you to do the same!
This is called Cupcake Dress, doesn’t the fabric look yummy?
3 Graces
One of the best parts of attending Open Studios is getting to know the artist and the story behind their work.
The 3 Graces is a drawing of Lisa’s aunt’s, mother’s and gandmother’s underpants. Lisa told me a touching story about the loveliness of these women and how they touched her life~ this work now means so much more to me. When you are deciding on adding a piece of art to your home and your life, I think it is important to have a personal connection to the piece whether it is the subject, the color or the emotion. You want it to move you, that being said…
Is Madonna missing her brassiere??
View of Lisa’s studio/home, love those dresses~
Bonnie’s prints are juicy in person, the colors jump off the paper and they are perfect for interior design~ I would love to suggest coupling 2 or 3 of these for impact on a wall~
The tiles are very unique and can be used in so many ways: backsplash for kitchen, studios, and bathrooms of course, but thinking outside the box how about tile table top of beautiful tiles or even just a beautiful accent highlighted at the center?
So many great choices for a wide frame for a mirror~
There will be many Open Studios events with the upcoming Holidays. Why not consider giving a piece of original art as a hostess gift or a present to a family member or better yet yourself? I hope I have given you a few more ideas and inspiration for adding art to your interior!

Pamela

Artist Spotlight: Kelley MacDonald
Jul 13 2011 ·2“A good painting to me has always been like a friend. It keeps me company, and inspires.”
Hedy Lamar
Today I’d like to introduce you to a wonderful artist and friend, Kelley MacDonald. Kelley paints in what she describes as a contemporary realist style. Kelley is well known for her “Dailies”: small, daily paintings focusing on a variety of subjects from donuts to landscapes. Kelley was in fact just named as the newest member of the DailyPainters.comgroup, an artistic goal for her and a true and deserved honor!
Recently I made a trip to Rhode Island to visit Kelley. Whenever I am invited to Kelley’s studio I know I’m in for a treat. The walk up the well worn, creaking stairs to her space fills my soul with anticipation. In the style of Monet, all four studio walls are covered from floor to ceiling with paintings. Dailies, sunsets, figures and birds are on display along with several of Kelley’s beribboned award-winning paintings.
As a painter, I am always hopeful that some of Kelley’s immense creativity will come to me through osmosis during one of these visits. I am newly inspired after each visit with Kelley and invariably I paint the next day with freer strokes of my brush and joy in my heart.
Kelley’s work reflects the heart and soul of a truly good person. In each painting, she sweeps her canvas with love and positive energy. I am proud to own several of Kelley’s paintings. Her sunset and daily paintings hanging in my home not only bring vitality and happiness to my space, but also keep me company and remind me of my dear friend, Kelley.

Consider Living With Art: Local Artist Lisa Daria Kennedy
Mar 16 2011 ·0“A good painting to me has always been like a friend. It keeps me company, comforts
and inspires.”
~Hedy Lamarr
For me, an interior design isn’t finished until the artwork has been installed. Art is the perfect finishing touch, imbuing a space with personality, color and life. In my area, south of Boston, we have a wonderful creative community. Whether it be oils, watercolors, acrylic or mixed media, we are blessed with artists who create with ease and great talent.
