Trend Report 2013
Oct 10 2012 · 0 comments · Design Events, Inspiration, Meanderings ·0
One of my favorite design events of the year occurs annually in October at the Boston Design Center. Design Days are full of fabulous activities and it all starts with the Trend Report seminar conducted by our V.P. and General Manager, Julie Rogowski. Trends 2013 is “the definitive list of the most important design styles, colors and patterns sure to be on everyone’s hot list.”
It’s always a very interesting and informative presentation. Here I’d like to share my take on the highlights from the Trends 2013 report…

COLOR
There will still be lots of color in design but in different shades and hues.
- dusky shades of yellow, mustard and amber
- Blues: periwinkle, bright teal, ocean blue
- Blue is somewhat of a latecomer to design and is often mixed with green
- Look for navy to be used with black
- Light and dark blue are thought to be conservative
- Ocean blue is calming
Tea Party
- smoky neutrals, with hints of mushroom and caramel
- Peaceful, quiet and relaxing colors
- Neutral tones act as a backdrop to a design
- Tea Party hues can have undertones of mushroom, rose or putty
- My favorite!
- Rosy tones of orange, coral and lobster
- Red is associated with cupid and the devil, raises blood pressure
- Corals and lobster tones in small doses if you please
PATTERN
We are going to be seeing more pattern in design than ever, so move over solids and get ready for some jazz!
Neo Geo
- Angular furniture forms, clean and graphic lines with a modern feel
- Tiles, floor coverings, wall treatments and fabrics will all showcase this trend
- Gives the feeling of control and certainty: the world is three dimensional, clean, modern and bold
- Bouquets and delicate blossom with graceful, lyrical lines
- Painterly and artistic
- Mixing large and small blooms together ~ love that!
- Enhances many styles of decor and softens the edges
- From pinstripes to awning stripes, bold, crisp combinations
- Tailored and dramatic, influenced by the hit show, ‘Mad Men’
- Animal prints and human forms from sedate to fanciful, realistic to imaginary
- Sculptural and fun
- Colorful and serious; contradictory, like life. I can’t wait to weave this trend into my 2013 designs!
STYLE
What is your style?
- Elegant finishes, soft lines, ladylike forms, touches of gold and silver leaf ~ oh my, I love this already!
- This is a woman of charm who leads men astray
- She has glamour and the sophistication of Old Hollywood, she is a beautiful and dangerous woman…
- This style will be seen in the curves of furniture and accessories as well as in the use of reflective finishes
This may well be my style!
- easy elegance, chic and multi-functional
- Urban, city living where designs will have clean lines, neutral gray color palettes with occasional pops of color
- celebrates individuality and character, charm and idiosyncratic design, lots of layering of elements
- Imagination and artistry shine and come to the forefront
- Freedom to surround yourself with everything you love and see how you thrive in your environment
I hope you’ve enjoyed my overview of a wonderful day of viewing new fabrics, furnishings and accessories in the best place on earth: the Boston Design Center. To see these trends up close, contact me and we’ll plan an amazing day at the BDC!
